Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is an upcoming post-apocalyptic action adventure film co-produced and directed by George Miller, who co-wrote it with Nico Lathouris. It serves as both a spin-off and a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), as well as the fifth film in the Mad Max franchise. It stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the title character Imperator Furiosa, with Chris Hemsworth, Alyla Browne, and Tom Burke in supporting roles.
In March 2020, Miller conducted casting auditions for the title role of the film. In October, Taylor-Joy, Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II were cast in starring roles, but due to a scheduling conflict, Abdul-Mateen was replaced by Burke in November. Several crew members from Fury Road returned for the film, including screenwriter Lathouris, film editor Margaret Sixel, costume designer Jenny Beavan, and composer Tom Holkenborg. Principal photography took place in Australia from June to October 2022.
Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, Furiosa is scheduled to be released in theatres in Australia on 23 May 2024 and in the United States on 24 May 2024.

Production[edit]
Development and casting[edit]
In March 2020, Variety reported that George Miller was using Skype to conduct casting auditions for the title role of Furiosa, a Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) spin-off film centered on the character of Imperator Furiosa. Anya Taylor-Joy was among the candidates.[2] In October, the film was in advanced development, with Taylor-Joy confirmed to be playing the title role, and Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II cast to co-star. Multiple Fury Road crew members were to be returning for the film, including film editor Margaret Sixel, production designer Colin Gibson, sound mixer Ben Osmo, and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt.[3]
In February 2021, composer Junkie XL, who previously scored Fury Road, confirmed he would return for Furiosa.[4] Jenny Beavan would also return to work on the costume design.[5] Miller chose Taylor-Joy for the title role after seeing her performance in an early cut of the film Last Night in Soho and for her audition he assigned her the "Mad as Hell" monologue from Sidney Lumet's Network.[6][7] She was paid $1.8 million for her involvement.[8] Due to a scheduling conflict, Abdul-Mateen exited the project in November, with Tom Burke cast to replace him.[9]
In January 2022, it was reported that Simon Duggan would be serving as cinematographer.[10] In June 2022, it was reported Nathan Jones and Angus Sampson were set to reprise their roles from Fury Road.[11] In August, Quaden Bayles, who worked on Miller's Three Thousand Years of Longing after a video about his mistreatment at school went viral, was announced to be appearing in Furiosa, in a small role.[12]
The film was awarded a AU$175 million filming incentive,[13] and spent a total of US$233 million (AU$343.2 million) in Australia, the most-ever for a film production in the country.[14]
